Flags don't transfer well into the digital world, where teens inhabit the majority of their time. Flags of yesterday (in the analog world) were different; you could fly them, display them, point and salute to them. Seeing a ton of older men (and women) on Instagram, regale themselves in red, white, and blue colors on the 4th of July, just comes across as a bit silly, like they're cosplaying.

Flags are partly just not cool anymore for the youth, the older gen takes the flags and colors way too seriously. The real American issues and values, can't be as easily visualized and simplified. But the youth does try to, take a look at all of the memes and graphs they've created. Anytime there is a pressing social issue, there are dozens of memes online by the next day and communicated in different tones, from the humorful to the informative, to the sentimental. This is progress.
